I like Jackie’s ‘Blue Sky’ thinking! All this environmental talk reminded me of an article I read a while back in a well known nature magazine about the importance of Wind Power in the future environmental sustainability of our energy needs. Old ‘pedal power’ pales into insignificance when you think about the potential of a bit of breeze. At the end of 2007, worldwide capacity of wind-powered generators was 94.1 gigawatts. Although wind produces about 1% of world-wide electricity use, it accounts for approximately 19% of electricity production in Denmark, 9% in Spain and Portugal, and 6% in Germany and the Republic of Ireland (2007 data). Globally, wind power generation increased more than fivefold between 2000 and 2007.
All this power has to come down to earth at some point and that’s where, (that’s right!) CABLE becomes the lynchpin that makes all this new fangled technology work. Large scale wind farms are typically connected to the local electric power transmission network with medium voltage cables such as 33kv BS6622, with Tri Rated cables and Coil End Lead (BS6195) being used to control the power flow in substations. Similarly, utility companies are increasingly being encouraged to buy back surplus electricity produced by small domestic turbines via in house two way feeder systems. These use BS5467 SWA cables to transport the energy on and off the local grid, and are a great way of reducing your electricity bills!
So whether you’re do your bit for the environment by cycling to work, or by contributing the surplus energy from your home back to the National Grid, cables are never far from the centre of the action!

I do my bit by walking to and from work, although there's no way I can believe it is only 12 "wet" days! Back to cables though - Gym bikes use cables and I've often wondered if we could use them as an alternative energy source by hooking them up to generators with a length of H07RN-F cable, for example... They could at least power the gym entertainment system - which would, in turn, inspire more intense exercise sessions. Imagine if the TV's started fading out when one slowed down in one's peddling!
